The UK Data Service, like some other data providers, does not own the data held in its collection but it is licensed by the data owners to curate and share the data on their behalf.

Researchers accessing the data have responsibilities to preserve data confidentiality and to observe the ethical and legal obligations pertaining to the data. In particular, researchers must maintain the commitments made to survey respondents to preserve the confidentiality of the data provided.

The conditions under which data may be accessed are specified in the dataset’s deposit licence and are also set out clearly on the ‘Access data’ tab of the dataset’s catalogue record.

Importantly, these conditions include providing the data only to users who have registered with the UK Data Service and agreed to its End User Licence (EUL).
