L2 vocabulary learning strategies

Schmitt (2010) claims that vocabulary is an essential component to master a second language due to it contributes to developing the four language skills.

Oxford (2011) explains that different researchers have suggested the following strategies for vocabulary learning:

  • Using or creating vocabulary clusters or webs
  • Using total physical response techniques
  • Using real objects for vocabulary learning
  • Looking up words in the dictionary
  • Linking sounds and images (the keyword technique)
  • Selective attention
  • Note-taking
  • Reading for vocabulary learning
  • Connecting new information with existing information
  • Keeping a vocabulary notebook
  • Mentally linking synonyms
  • Constructing meanings and analogies
  • Using personal experiences to learn vocabulary
  • Making T-charts
  • Contextual guessing and checking accuracy of guessing
  • Rote repetition
