L2 vocabulary learning strategies
Schmitt (2010) claims that vocabulary is an essential component to master a second language due to it contributes to developing the four language skills.
Oxford (2011) explains that different researchers have suggested the following strategies for vocabulary learning:
- Using or creating vocabulary clusters or webs
- Using total physical response techniques
- Using real objects for vocabulary learning
- Looking up words in the dictionary
- Linking sounds and images (the keyword technique)
- Selective attention
- Note-taking
- Reading for vocabulary learning
- Connecting new information with existing information
- Keeping a vocabulary notebook
- Mentally linking synonyms
- Constructing meanings and analogies
- Using personal experiences to learn vocabulary
- Making T-charts
- Contextual guessing and checking accuracy of guessing
- Rote repetition
