L2 listening strategies

O’Malley, Chamot, and Küpper (1989) investigated strategies for listening comprehension and found out that effective listeners used the following strategies:


  • Selective attention (e.g. pay attention to pause and intonation)
  • Self-monitoring
  • Elaboration using background knowledge
  • Inferring meaning (from context)

Rost (2010) mentions some other strategies:


  • Predicting information or ideas before listening
  • Monitoring comprehension
  • Asking for clarification
  • Providing a personal response to what is heard
