that effective listeners used the following strategies:

attention (e.g. pay attention to pause and intonation)
Self-monitoring

using background knowledge

meaning (from context)
Rost (2010) mentions some
other strategies:
Predicting
information or ideas before listening
Monitoring
comprehension
Asking
for clarification
Providing
a personal response to what is heard
