Any person supporting the learning of apprentices is in a position of trust. It is therefore essential that university staff, work place mentors and employers are aware of how to act if they become concerned about an apprentice's wellbeing and safety , or should an apprentice repot a concern to them.
This include a specific responsibility for safeguarding apprentices from radicalisation. This is known as PREVENT. PREVENT is the safe guarding, preventative part of the governments counter terrorism strategy called CONTEST.
The purpose of PREVENT is to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism.
-
Watch these seven short videos produced by Nottingham Trent University and their role in safeguarding from radicalisation.
They provide a clear overview of why PREVENT is important, how to identify those at risk of radicalisation, how to respond and the risk from terrorism in the UK.
More detailed information about PREVENT Duty in higher education can be found here.

As a work place mentor you should be aware how to use and signpost others to university and local employer safeguarding polices, process and sources of support.
The University has a safeguarding strategy and a team of Designated Safeguarding Officers

You can report a concern by emailing safeguard@essex.ac.uk. Information about what to expect when you report a concern is available here.
-
If you have concerns about, or an Apprentice divulges other risks to their wellbeing that give you or them cause for concern such as harassment, bullying, financial burden, stress or anxiety you should direct them to 'Report and Support'
